WANDERING EARTH

Last year a Chinese film got many people’s attention: The Wandering Earth. It tells the story of a distant future in which the ageing Sun is about to turn into a red giant and threaten to engulf the Earth’s orbit within 300 years, therefore in order to preserve further human civilization, human beings have made a plan to get out of the solar system and arrive at the Alpha Centauri system, which is 4.2 light-years away.

At the beginning of the film, it is said:
“At first, nobody cares about this disaster.
It is just another wildfire, another drought,
another extinction of species, another vanishing city.
Until everyone is entwined with this disaster.”

Isn’t it similar to what we are facing with now? Until more and more people get quarantined at home because of the coronavirus. Every morning, the first thing which most people will do now is to check the number of infected people by a coronavirus in their own country. Coronavirus is really contagious, each day thousands of people get infected. But if we think it more mindfully and read more information about our human current health situation, I think most people will realize that besides the virus, our eating, drinking and living habits are also “contaminating” us and eventually will put our lives in danger. At that time, there will be no pure land and we have to wander on Earth.

According to the World Health Organization research, every 21 seconds, one person dies from a stroke. 15 million people suffer stroke worldwide each year. Of these, 5 million dies and another 5 million are permanently disabled. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number 1 cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for an estimated 9.6 million deaths in 2018. There are more and more….

What are the main causes of these fatal diseases? There is a Chinese saying: Illness comes in through the mouth, many severe diseases are caused by our eating habits. In the documentary “The Game Changers”, the researches have shown that eating 50 grams of processed meat daily (about one hot dog) increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer by 17 per cent. A single animal-based meal can thicken our blood quickly. “The China Study” has concluded that people who eat a predominantly whole-food, plant-based diet—avoiding animal products as the main source of nutrition, including beef, pork, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, and milk, and reducing their intake of processed foods and refined carbohydrates—will escape, reduce, or reverse the development of numerous diseases.

If eating meat is so unhealthy, why for such a long time people have been believing it is so good and indispensable for the human body?

Do you know the story of “White dog and black dog”?

In the world of dogs, it is said that if a dog is a white one, in its next lifetime, it will be reincarnated as a human. One day a black dog sees a white dog and said to it: “Congratulations, next lifetime you will be a human! ” But the white dog answered sadly: “I am not sure about it, because I don’t know if I am a human, I will still have bones to chew.”

You may laugh at this white dog, thinking: “What a stupid dog, when you are human, there is much more delicious food to enjoy.” Have you ever thought about maybe we were the “white dog” many times in our life?

In the beginning, people thought coronavirus was just flu, then it turned out to be so contagious and sever.

In the beginning, people laughed at the idea of creating the online business, now it is worldwide.

In the beginning, people believed the Earth was the centre of the solar system, then scientists proved it was wrong.

What if we are also wrong with eating meat? What if we are just blindly and unconsciously following our habits? Our family, country or mankind habits? Like the white dog? If the computer is broken, we can buy a new one; if the car is damaged, we can buy a new one as well; but if our human body is damaged or broken, there will not be another one.

Now many people around the world stay in quarantine, maybe it is also time to stop and reflect on our life? Human beings have been focusing on accelerating technological and material developments to tackle survival problems and have more security by possessing materials. However, when the coronavirus comes, suddenly, we are all facing the life and death issue. And the world economy has been highly slowed down because of it, probably people may face more economical difficulties afterwards. Hundreds of years of our hard-working is on the edge of vanishing. Are we sure that we walk the right direction?

Humans have been chasing after materials and maximizing the profits for so long time at all expenses, now we are facing global warming problems, animals extinction, plastic pollution, energy crisis, ice melting in north pole etc. Continuing this way, eventually, the Earth will be destroyed. At that moment, what we are going to say to our posterity? What we will leave for them as an inheritance? A a wandering Earth, a broken home? Or a broken heart?

A Chinese poet said: “The place where my heart is settled is my home”. Our heart has been wandering in the material world for too long. At the end of our life, it will be the soul which accompanies us to the next journey, nothing else. Life is not a material feast, but a cultivation of the soul. It is time to return back to our soul, our spiritual world, starting from being a compassionate and kind person, starting from seeing our whole world as a unity and seeing everything and every being share the common living and prosperity; starting from our mouth and our plate.
